According to the Independence Bulletin Journal of December 21, 1962, the men's choir was scheduled to sing at the solemn high mass beginning at twelve o'clock midnight on Christmas Eve. The choir was directed by Eugene McKinley and the organist was Bernadette Toomey. Members of the choir were: Cy Handfelt, Lacey Gee, Ed Walsh, Joe Mason, Jack McGrane, John Gaul, Howard Taggart, Robert Walsh, T. E. Howes, Len Froyen, Robert Glovik, Dr. John Mochal, Leo Gerken, Robert Baebenroth, Richard Arends, Leo Sands, Vincent Jamason, and John Andrews.
The album was released in the mid-1960s likely around the time of Vatican II as all of the songs are in Latin.
The director, Eugene McKinley, was also the vocal music instructor at Independence High School from 1962-1967. He left Independence for a position at Iowa Central College in Fort Dodge, and later taught at Ohio State University and Del Mar College in Texas. "McKinley is widely credited for his contributions and body of work in the choral arts and the visions that lead to the creation of what is now the Iowa Choral Directors Association." https://www.boernefuneralhome.
We would like to find a photo of the choir and the names of other men who may have joined after 1962. If you have a photo or additional names, please send them to Bonnie O'Brien at prieber74@gmail.com or call the parish office at 319-334-7191.
